Ian Nepomniachtchi

Ian Nepomniachtchi was born in Bjanks, Russia, on 14 July 1990. He ran into chess within the boundaries of his family, where his uncle and his grandfather, both amateur players, taught him the basic rules: Ian was only five at the time but five years later he succeeded in becoming European U10 Champion, retaining the title in the U12 category for the following two years. In 2004 “Nepo” also took home the U18 Russian title and three years later he became a Grandmaster. A year later, in 2008, he won the Aeroflot Open with a convincing 7/9. His greatest achievement in career however, is dated 2010, when he first won the European Championship in Rijeka, Croatia and then went on to win the Russian Championship in Moscow, ahead of two serial Candidates to the World Championship such as Alexander Grischuk and Peter Svidler. He represented his country during the World Team Championship that Russia won in 2013 at Antalya, Turkey, earning himself a gold medal on Board 4 in the process. In the June 2014 rating list “Nepo” is ranked 25th with 2735 points, not far from his all-time best, 18th place with the same rating in January 2012.
